About Us
First opened in 1999, Dickie-Doodles was named after a page to Richard I, who, due to some rather riotous behavior, had made himself quite unpopular. To remove him from court, he was charged with delivering the first Royal Charter for Kendal, and was told to set off immeadiately.
He left London on November 18th 1196, and arrived at the Cock and Dolphin in Kendal 10 days later, tired, and in need of refreshment. Very soon, he was steaming drunk, and was put in the stocks! After being released, he was chased by a crowd to the river Kent, and across to the opposite bank.
Angry at how he had been treated, he sent a postcard to the King asking for the Charter to apply to Far Cross Bank, to which he received a telegram granting his request, and suggesting the name 'Doodleshire'. This is where we get the nickname of 'The Shire'.
